Rhine Promenade
The Rhine promenade runs along the river between the Old Town and the MedienHafen and is regarded as one of the loveliest boulevards in Germany. It came into being in the 1990s after the former riverside traffic was diverted into a tunnel, freeing up space for a broad, tree-lined boulevard. Cafés, steps down to the water and wide sightlines lend the place an almost Mediterranean atmosphere. In fine weather half of Düsseldorf meets here to stroll, cycle and linger. The promenade elegantly links the historic Old Town with the modern architecture of the harbour.
From traffic artery to boulevard
Until the 1990s a busy riverside road separated the Old Town from the Rhine. With the bold construction of a tunnel, the traffic disappeared underground, and in its place a generous promenade arose. This intervention is regarded as one of Düsseldorf's great urban-planning successes, because it gave the city back its river and created a lively piece of urban quality of life.
Mediterranean Rhine feeling
With its plane trees, its broad steps down to the water and its many cafés, the promenade exudes an almost southern atmosphere on warm days. Here people sit on the steps, watch the passing ships and enjoy the wide view across the river. Strollers, cyclists and joggers share the broad boulevard, which has quickly become the city's favourite meeting place by the water.
Tips for your visit
The promenade is at its finest in the late afternoon and evening, when the sun stands over the Rhine and the cafés fill up. From the Old Town it can be walked comfortably as far as the MedienHafen, past Burgplatz and beneath the Rhine Tower. If you like, combine the walk with an Altbier in the Old Town or a drink in the harbour bars — both lie just a few minutes away.
