The Rhine is Düsseldorf's lifeline and stage in one. The Rhine promenade between the Old Town and the MedienHafen came into being after the riverside traffic was diverted into a tunnel, and has since been a popular meeting place for strolling, with cafés and steps right by the water. From here panoramic river cruises set off with views of the skyline, the Rhine Tower and the MedienHafen. At sunset you quickly understand why the river is so defining for the city's sense of itself.
