Carlstadt

The Carlstadt adjoins the bustling Old Town directly to the south, but forms its quiet, distinguished counterpart. Laid out in the late 18th century to a Neoclassical plan, the quarter captivates with its strictly rectangular street grid, dignified town houses and a relaxed elegance. Antique dealers, art galleries, delicatessens and fine restaurants shape the picture, and right in the middle lies the tradition-rich Carlsplatz with its daily market. Here fresh produce, flowers and delicacies meet a clientele that knows how to appreciate enjoyment and style.

Location & Character

The Carlstadt lies between the Old Town and the Rhine bank in the south of the city center and is regarded as one of Düsseldorf's most distinguished and quietest quarters. The quarter was laid out to a plan and captivates with its clear street grid, dignified town houses and a relaxed elegance. Unlike the busy Old Town next door, the Carlstadt radiates serenity and attracts an art- and enjoyment-oriented public.

History & Change

In the late 18th century, Elector Carl Theodor had the quarter laid out as an orderly city extension, which gave it its name and its Neoclassical character. The regular development and generous street lines stand out clearly to this day from the labyrinthine medieval core of the Old Town. Over the centuries the Carlstadt established itself as a preferred address for traders, art connoisseurs and upmarket living.

Sights & Surroundings

Carlsplatz is the lively heart of the quarter: at the tradition-rich market, fruit, vegetables, flowers, cheese and delicacies are sold and eaten at small stalls. All around, antique shops, galleries and delicatessens invite you to browse. The nearby Hetjens Museum is devoted to ceramics, and from the Carlstadt you can reach both the Old Town and the Rhine promenade on foot.
