Old Town

The Old Town is the pulsating heart of Düsseldorf and known worldwide as the "longest bar in the world": packed into the tightest of spaces are hundreds of pubs, brewhouses and eateries, where the dark Altbier is poured fresh. Between Burgplatz with the Castle Tower, the Baroque St. Lambertus church with its twisted spire and the lanes around the market square, life goes on day and night. Right behind it opens the Rhine bank with its promenade, which links the historic quarter with the river and invites you to stroll.

Location & Character

The Old Town lies directly on the right bank of the Rhine and forms the historic and convivial center of Düsseldorf. In a dense network of cobbled lanes, brewhouses, eateries and shops line up side by side, so that the quarter bears the nickname "longest bar in the world". By day visitors browse through the narrow streets, while in the evening the quarter turns into a lively meeting place for locals and guests from all over the world.

History & Sights

Around Burgplatz with its striking Castle Tower and the St. Lambertus church with its characteristically twisted spire, the history reaches back to the Middle Ages. The market square with the equestrian statue of Elector Jan Wellem, the town hall and the electoral buildings bear witness to the former residence era. Despite war destruction, the Old Town has preserved its historic layout and unites monuments and hospitality in the tightest of spaces.

Life & Surroundings

The Altbier is a cult here: in the tradition-steeped house breweries, the "Köbesse" tap the dark beer straight from the barrel. From Burgplatz a broad flight of steps leads down to the Rhine promenade, which invites you to stroll and linger by the water. Galleries, boutiques and the Film Museum round off the offering, and the neighbouring Carlstadt as well as the Königsallee are just a few steps away.
