Oberkassel

Oberkassel is the only one of the central quarters that lies on the left bank of the Rhine and is regarded as one of Düsseldorf's most distinguished addresses. Magnificent Gründerzeit and Art Nouveau buildings line generous streets, and the Oberkassel Rhine promenade offers a unique view of the Old Town silhouette opposite. Around Belsenplatz the quarter life pulses with cafés, restaurants and shops. In the immediate neighbourhood lies Niederkassel with its lively Japanese community, its shops and the EKŌ House with its temple and Japanese garden.

Oberkassel

Location & Character

Oberkassel lies directly opposite the Old Town on the left bank of the Rhine and is connected with the centre by the Oberkassel Bridge. The quarter is among the most distinguished and sought-after residential locations in the city. Magnificent old buildings, wide avenues and a quiet, refined atmosphere shape the district, which is nonetheless only a few minutes from the busy centre.

Sights & Surroundings

The Oberkassel Rhine promenade offers one of the loveliest views in the city: across the broad river, a panorama opens up of the Old Town silhouette with the Castle Tower and church spires. At Belsenplatz, the lively heart of the quarter, cafés, restaurants and boutiques come together. Gründerzeit and Art Nouveau façades lend the streets an elegant, harmonious appearance.

Japanese Neighbourhood

In neighbouring Niederkassel, Düsseldorf's Japanese community concentrates, one of the largest in Europe. Japanese shops, restaurants and schools shape the picture, and the EKŌ House invites you to immerse yourself in Far Eastern tradition with its Buddhist temple, Japanese garden and cultural events. This combination of Rhenish distinction and Japanese flair makes the west of the city special.
