Duesseldorf with Kids
Duesseldorf is surprisingly child-friendly and green. We combine animal discoveries at the Aquazoo Löbbecke with plenty of room to run around in the Nordpark, a quiet walk along the Rhine promenade and the wide-eyed wonder up on the Rheinturm. The routes are planned so they stay manageable for little legs, with enough breaks for ice cream, playgrounds and child-friendly snacks — a day the whole family will fondly remember.
Best time to visit: April to October — in mild weather the day is best spent outdoors
Day 1
A day for the whole family
We start with the animals at the Aquazoo Löbbecke, then romp through the Nordpark and Japanese Garden, walk along the Rhine and finish with the view from the Rheinturm.
- 9:30 - 12:00
Aquazoo Löbbecke
The Aquazoo Löbbecke in the Nordpark brings aquarium and natural-history museum together under one roof. Children marvel at sharks, penguins, crocodiles and jellyfish, walk through a tropical insectarium and learn playfully how life in the water works — an experience whatever the weather.
Tip: Arrive right at opening time — then it's still pleasantly quiet in front of the shark tanks.
- 12:15 - 13:30
Lunch break in the Nordpark
Right next door lies the expansive Nordpark with food on offer and shady spots. It's a good place for a child-friendly lunch break — a warm meal or a picnic you've brought along on one of the large lawns.
- 14:00 - 15:30
Nordpark and Japanese Garden
The Nordpark is a green oasis with water features, flowering beds and plenty of room to run around. Its centrepiece is the authentic Japanese Garden with a pond, curving bridges and cherry trees — a tranquil island where even children find calm.
Tip: In spring the cherry blossom blooms in the Japanese Garden — the loveliest moment of the year.
- 16:00 - 17:00
Rhine promenade
By tram back towards the Old Town and down to the Rhine. The car-free Rhine promenade is ideal for a relaxed family stroll: broad paths, steps by the water for watching the ships, and ice cream always within reach.
- 17:15 - 18:30
View from the Rheinturm
For the crowning finale, up the 240-metre Rheinturm. From the observation deck, little explorers look out over the whole city, the Rhine and the tiny ships far below — a great moment of wonder that rounds off the day perfectly.
- 18:45 - 20:00
Family evening in Flingern
For dinner, to the cosy Café Hüftgold, which serves savoury dishes alongside its legendary cakes. A relaxed, child-friendly spot where the whole family can wind down after the eventful day.
