Basilica of St. Lambertus

The Basilica of St. Lambertus is the most important church in Düsseldorf's Old Town and, with its unmistakable twisted spire, visible from afar. The Late Gothic brick building has shaped the silhouette of the city on the Rhine since the 14th century. The characteristically warped spire is entwined with a legend and is today a cherished landmark of Düsseldorf. Inside, the church impresses with precious furnishings from several eras, including tombs of the Dukes of Berg. In 1974 St. Lambertus was raised to the rank of a minor basilica by Pope Paul VI.

The twisted spire

The most striking feature of St. Lambertus is its characteristically warped, seemingly leaning spire, which makes the church unmistakable. Legends surround the twist, but the true cause probably lies in the timber used, which has distorted over the centuries. However the spire came by its shape, it has long become a beloved landmark recognizable from many points in the Old Town.

History & furnishings

The Late Gothic brick building has shaped the city silhouette since the 14th century and was for a long time the most important parish church in Düsseldorf. Inside, the basilica preserves precious works of art from several eras, including tombs of the Dukes of Berg, who once resided here. In 1974 the church was raised to the rank of a minor basilica by Pope Paul VI, underlining its special ecclesiastical importance.

Tips for your visit

The church lies in the middle of the Old Town on Stiftsplatz, just a few steps from Burgplatz and the Rhine promenade. A look inside is worthwhile to experience the artful furnishings and the calm atmosphere away from the bustle. Anyone strolling through the lanes should deliberately seek out the spire - it also serves as a point of orientation through the labyrinthine quarter.
