With the Hoppeditz awakening on 11 November the carnival season begins, reaching its climax in the Old Town with the Rose Monday parade and over 60 floats.

City Life

Düsseldorf's Carnival is, alongside Cologne and Mainz, one of the great strongholds in the Rhineland and shapes the city from November into February. The season is traditionally opened on 11 November with the Hoppeditz awakening at the town hall, when the symbolic figure of Düsseldorf Carnival is brought to life and pokes fun at city politics in a mocking speech. The highlight is the Rose Monday parade, which winds through the inner city and the Old Town with over 60 floats, walking groups and marching bands. Famous are the political theme floats by float builder Jacques Tilly, which cause a stir across the country every year. Hundreds of thousands of carnival revellers line the route. The city closes large parts of the inner city and runs additional trains and buses.
