Japan Day draws crowds with cosplay and a grand firework display on the Rhine promenade
On the Rhine promenade, Düsseldorf celebrates the Japan Day with a stage programme, cosplay and a grand Japanese firework display over the Rhine.
The Japan Day is one of the largest festivals of Japanese culture in Europe and transforms the Rhine promenade in the city centre into a stage for German-Japanese exchange every year. Düsseldorf is home to one of the largest Japanese communities on the continent, which has shaped the festival for years. Along the Rhine, stalls line up with calligraphy, tea ceremonies, manga and Japanese cuisine, while on the stages drumming groups, martial arts demonstrations and music can be experienced. The cosplay scene in particular draws numerous costumed fans who present their elaborate disguises. The finale is a grand Japanese firework display over the Rhine, which draws hundreds of thousands to the banks. Admission is free; the city recommends travelling by train and bus because of the crowds.
