Brauerei zum Schluessel
The Brauerei zum Schluessel is one of the great names of Duesseldorf's Old Town, the longest bar in the world. Behind the historic facade the house Schluessel Altbier has been brewed for generations and tapped fresh from the wooden cask. With it come Rhineland classics such as pork knuckle, Sauerbraten and Himmel un Aed in a spacious, characterful taproom. A meeting point for locals and guests, where the Koebes waiters in their blue aprons keep the glasses topped up.
Schluessel Altbier from the Cask
At the centre stands the house Schluessel Altbier, made in the in-house brewery and tapped fresh from the wooden cask. The Koebes, the typical waiters in blue aprons, bring the small glasses without being asked until a coaster on the glass signals the end. The dark, slightly bitter Altbier is considered one of the most balanced in the city and is simply part of any visit to the Old Town.
Rhineland Cuisine
To go with the beer, the kitchen serves hearty Rhineland classics that fill you up and suit sociable company. On the menu are crispy pork knuckle, Sauerbraten with raisin sauce, potato pancakes and the sweet-and-savoury Himmel un Aed of mashed potato, apple sauce and black pudding. The portions are generous, the preparation down-to-earth and honest, very much in the style of a genuine brewpub.
In the Heart of the Old Town
The brewery lies in the heart of the Old Town, known as the longest bar in the world for its dense cluster of pubs. The spacious taproom and the lively outdoor area fill up quickly, especially at the weekend. A reservation is not customary; the place runs on passing and regular trade, so larger groups should expect a little waiting time and the typical shuffling together.
