History in Düsseldorf
Kaiserswerth, the Castle Tower, the city's history on the Rhine
Düsseldorf's history reaches from the imperial palatinate in Kaiserswerth, which is linked with Barbarossa, through the granting of town rights in 1288 to its rise as a residence and state capital. The Castle Tower on Burgplatz recalls the former city palace that burned down in 1872, the Old Town recalls centuries of Rhenish brewing and trading tradition. Shaped by Elector Jan Wellem, industrialisation and reconstruction, the city on the river tells a story of constant change.
