Kunstsammlung NRW (K20 & K21)

The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen ranks among the most important art museums in Germany and presents its treasures at two locations in Düsseldorf. The K20 on Grabbeplatz shows, behind its black, curved granite façade, classical modernism with works by Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso and outstanding holdings of Pop Art. The K21 in the historic Ständehaus is devoted to contemporary art and impresses, among other things, with the spectacular walkable net installation "in orbit" by Tomás Saraceno, high beneath the glass dome. Together the houses span an arc from the early 20th century to the art of the present day.

K20 – classical modernism

The K20 on Grabbeplatz is an eye-catcher from the outside: its curved façade of black polished granite stands out strikingly against the cityscape. Inside unfolds one of the most important collections of classical modernism, with key works by Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso and Wassily Kandinsky. Pop Art, too, is outstandingly represented. This makes the house one of the most important addresses for 20th-century art in Germany.

K21 – art of the present

The K21 is housed in the magnificent historic Ständehaus and concentrates on art since the 1980s. Beneath the glass dome floats the spectacular installation "in orbit" by Tomás Saraceno — a vast, walkable steel net that the brave can enter at dizzying heights. Changing exhibitions of international contemporary artists make the house a lively place for current artistic positions.

Tips for your visit

Both houses can be combined well in a single day, but lie some distance apart, so you should allow a little time for the journey. The K20 is centrally located near the Old Town, the K21 by the Kaiserteich south of the inner city. Anyone wanting to step into "in orbit" should expect crowds on fine days and come early, as the net installation is highly sought after.
