Kaiserswerth

Kaiserswerth is the oldest and one of the most charming districts of Düsseldorf, idyllically situated on the Rhine in the north. Above the river towers the mighty ruin of the Kaiserpfalz, where Emperor Frederick Barbarossa once resided and which today recalls the imperial past, visible from afar. The Baroque village core with its cobbled lanes, town houses and the St. Suitbertus basilica exudes historic flair. At the same time, Kaiserswerth is the cradle of the modern deaconry: here Theodor Fliedner founded the Kaiserswerth Deaconry and shaped nursing care far beyond Germany.

Location & Character

Kaiserswerth lies far in the north of Düsseldorf directly on the Rhine and is the oldest district of the city. With its well-preserved Baroque village core, cobbled lanes and idyllic location on the river, it feels almost like a small town of its own. The district is quiet, dignified and steeped in history, and attracts walkers, day-trippers and history enthusiasts alike.

History & Kaiserpfalz

High above the Rhine rises the imposing ruin of the Kaiserpfalz, which was expanded in the Middle Ages under Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and to this day recalls the imperial past, visible from afar. The St. Suitbertus basilica goes back to Saint Suitbertus, who founded a monastery here in the 7th century. Thus the history of Kaiserswerth reaches back to the early days of the Rhineland.

Deaconry & Surroundings

Kaiserswerth is regarded as the cradle of the modern deaconry: in the 19th century Theodor Fliedner founded the Kaiserswerth Deaconry here and laid the foundation for modern nursing care, which radiated from here around the world. The extensive deaconry institutions shape the district to this day. Along the Rhine promenade and in the Baroque lanes, the history of the place can be experienced up close on a stroll.
