Hofgarten
The Hofgarten is regarded as the oldest public park in Germany and is the green lung of Düsseldorf's inner city. Laid out from 1769, the expansive park stretches as a green axis from the city center down to the Rhine. Old stands of trees, meadows, watercourses and quiet ponds make it a popular place of recreation in the middle of the city. On its eastern edge lies the elegant Jägerhof Palace, which today houses the Goethe Museum. Also well known is the statue "Jröne Jong", a green-patinated bronze figure that is one of the park's many endearing details.
Germany's oldest public park
The Hofgarten was laid out from 1769 and is regarded as the oldest public park in Germany - that is, a green space intended for the general public from the very start. This early opening to the citizens was unusual for the time and underlines the park's special significance. To this day the Hofgarten is a central place of recreation and a living piece of urban history in the middle of Düsseldorf.
Green axis to the Rhine
The expansive grounds stretch as a green axis from the city center down to the Rhine, charmingly linking the inner city and the river. Old trees, wide meadows, watercourses and quiet ponds alternate and invite you to stroll, jog and linger. Directly adjoining the Königsallee and the Kö-Bogen, the park forms a soothing green contrast to the busy bustle of the city.
Jägerhof Palace & details
On the eastern edge of the Hofgarten lies the elegant Jägerhof Palace, a Rococo building that today houses the Goethe Museum. In the park itself you discover many endearing details, among them the green-patinated bronze figure "Jröne Jong", which the people of Düsseldorf have taken to their hearts. Anyone strolling through the park keeps coming upon sculptures, small bridges and idyllic corners that invite you to pause.
