MedienHafen
The MedienHafen is one of the most spectacular architecture quarters in Germany and a prime example of successful structural change. Where the trading and Rhine harbour once handled goods, media companies, advertising agencies, architecture firms, restaurants and bars have today taken up residence. World-famous is the "Neuer Zollhof" with its three curved, seemingly tilting buildings by star architect Frank Gehry, whose façades shimmer in white, stainless steel and reddish brick. Between old harbour basins, historic cranes and bold new architecture, a fascinating contrast emerges that makes the MedienHafen one of the most fashionable quarters in the city.
From harbour to creative quarter
For decades the site was a busy trading and Rhine harbour, where goods were loaded and stored. As classic harbour operations declined, the quarter changed fundamentally: today media companies, agencies, architecture firms and dining are based here. Preserved cranes, quay walls and old harbour basins recall the industrial past and form an attractive setting for the modern use.
The Gehry buildings
The undisputed landmark of the MedienHafen is the "Neuer Zollhof" with its three curved buildings by Frank Gehry. The structures seem to sway and dance, their façades of white plaster, gleaming stainless steel and reddish brick reflected in the water of the harbour basin. This unconventional architecture has made the MedienHafen world-famous and draws architecture fans and photographers from all over the world.
Tips for your visit
The Gehry buildings look most impressive in the late afternoon, when the light sets the metal façades aglow. Around the harbour basins, numerous restaurants and bars invite you to linger, so the architecture tour combines well with a break. The nearby Rhine Tower and the promenade lie within walking distance, so you can experience the harbour, the view and the Rhine in a single day.
