The longest bar in the world: Düsseldorf's Altbier culture in the Old Town
In the Old Town, the longest bar in the world, the house breweries pour their top-fermented dark Altbier fresh.
Düsseldorf's Old Town bears the nickname "longest bar in the world", because hundreds of pubs, bars and brewhouses crowd into the tightest of spaces. The centrepiece of the beer culture is the Altbier, a top-fermented, dark and slightly bitter beer that is traditionally served in small, slim glasses. Four house breweries shape the picture of the Old Town: Uerige, Füchschen, Schlüssel and Schumacher brew their Alt partly on the spot and pour it fresh. Characteristic is the Köbes, the waiter in the blue apron, who refills the glasses unasked until the guest places a beer mat on the glass. Around the brewhouses, Rhenish specialities such as Reibekuchen and Halve Hahn have become established. For many visitors, a brewhouse tour is part of the essential programme of a visit to Düsseldorf.
